  • Dragon Castle View History

Castle View Elementary school was built in 1967 atop a granite hill in the Canyon Crest neighborhood of Riverside. The name, Castle View, was chosen because Benedict Castle, which is  located on Chicago could be seen by standing on the top of the the granite hill next to the B-building. The hilly area surrounding the school were vacant fields teeming with native California flora and fauna. When the school opened in 1967 with an enrollment of 250 students and 8 teachers there were only four buildings, the A and B Pods, the library and the administration building. The C Pod, Multipurpose Room and the staff parking lot were built ten years later in 1977. Originally the parking lot and the adjoining granite hill (now known as Violation Hill) were supposed to be another building but as luck would have it the granite hill could not be removed.  Dynamite was tried but because of the proximity to the B Pod the amount needed could not be used without taking out the hill and the building.
Therefore the hill is still with us.
The original student body  chose the Dragon as Castle View's Mascot and green and white as the schools colors. Faculty and students still wear these colors every friday  to reflect their school spirit.

  • Mrs. Sperry Volunteer of the Year
    Cathy Sperry

Although her volunteering at Castle View dates back further than 1998, that was the first year that she directed a small group of students in a production of Aesop's Fables. Mrs. Sperry began volunteering at the school by assisting younger students with their reading, she was reading Aesop's Fables with the children and decided to have them perform the fable for the other students in their class. Thus began from so simple an act the Castle View Drama Club, still going strong 15 year later. The following year Mrs. Sperry joined forces with the sixth grade teachers and staged an original production of "Goldilocks Strikes Again" thus not only utilizing the wasted MPR stage but also allowing students the opportunity to sing, dance and act in front of an audience. While she was proud of the productions she always saw that they could be bigger and more professional with better  costumes, music and stage sets. She expected the students to do their very best and did not expect less of them just because of their young ages.
In the fifteen years since the first play the drama program has evolved from two productions with just sixth graders to opportunities for all grades to participate. We are offered the Red Ribbon Week Play,Kindergarten Thanksgiving program, the Winter play, Spring Play, Mother's Day Poetry, 1st Grade Play as well as the 6th grade Promotion.
Mrs. Sperry's volunteer efforts have touched on an immense number of students, and we continue to see them use the tools that she so selflessly taught them to build upon their futures.

  • Castle View is a Dual Language Immersion School

The Dual Language Immersion program offers English speaking and Spanish speaking students an exciting, enriching and challenging educational opportunity. All students will learn to read, write, and communicate effectively in Spanish and English while achieving high levels of academic success. Students will have the bilingual skills and cross-cultural competencies needed to succeed in our multicultural society and global economy.

These are priceless gifts that will serve our children for a life-time. Dual language immersion programs have been used successfully with English and Spanish-speaking children in California for more than 25 years. Research shows impressive development of both second language fluency and academic achievement.
